Air conditioning in West Sussex

Arctic Cool is based in Storrington, in the middle of West Sussex, which makes this county our home patch rather than a place we travel to.

RH20RH12RH13RH14RH10RH11

Our base is in Storrington, a downland town on the northern edge of the South Downs, with half the parish inside the national park and the South Downs Way running along the ridge above. From here the county opens out, Pulborough and Billingshurst up the A29, Horsham to the north, Steyning and Washington at the foot of the Downs, Worthing on the coast and the mid Sussex towns beyond. Our F-Gas qualified engineers install, service and repair Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning across the county from this one base, in homes, offices, shops and anywhere else a room gets too hot to use.

Being based in the county changes how quickly we can look after it. A service visit in Pulborough, a fault call in Horsham or a survey in Steyning is a short local drive rather than a long run from outside the area, which keeps quotes sharper and callouts easier to book at short notice. We work across the wider South East as well, but West Sussex is home ground for our engineers, so tell us where you are and what the job is and we will say straight away if we can get to you and how soon.

The buildings

The building stock of West Sussex, from flint cottage to new town estate

The older end of the county’s stock runs along the Downs and the coast. Storrington’s centre is a conservation area with flint and brick cottages, Steyning’s high street is lined with timber framed and Georgian buildings, and Worthing keeps Regency and Victorian terraces near the seafront. Villages such as Washington, Findon and West Chiltington mix listed cottages with substantial family homes under the scarp. Buildings like these ask for care, solid walls, awkward roof voids and planning rules that limit where an outdoor unit can sit. We survey first, route pipework discreetly, and where a property is listed or inside a conservation area we tell you honestly what consent is needed before anything is fixed to a wall.

Much of the rest is far younger. Crawley was planned as a post-war new town built as self contained neighbourhoods, and areas like Three Bridges, Tilgate, Pound Hill and Ifield are full of 1950s and 1960s family houses, many with lofts since converted into bedrooms and offices. Horsham pairs Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the centre with wide estate runs of 1950s to 1970s family homes, while Storrington itself is largely three and four bedroom detached and semi-detached houses. This is straightforward stock for wall-mounted splits, short pipe runs, a tidy condenser position at the back and real relief for loft rooms and south-facing extensions that overheat every summer.

The work

Air conditioning work we do across West Sussex

The spread of jobs matches the spread of the county. In commuter towns like Horsham, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead the common request is a quiet system for a home office or a bedroom that holds its heat on summer nights. Around Crawley and Manor Royal, one of the biggest business districts in the South East, we are asked about offices, shops and server rooms that need dependable cooling all year. Along the Downs and towards the coast it is glazed extensions, loft conversions and village shops and restaurants. Every system we fit is Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric, installed and looked after by F-Gas qualified engineers.

  • Wall-mounted splits for bedrooms and home offices in Horsham, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill
  • Discreet installs for flint and period cottages in Storrington, Steyning and the downland villages
  • Multi-split systems for larger family houses in Pulborough, Billingshurst and West Chiltington
  • Air conditioning for offices, shops, cafes and restaurants in Crawley, Horsham and Worthing
  • Server room and comms room cooling around Manor Royal and the Gatwick business area
  • Cooling and heating for garden rooms and glazed extensions from the Downs to the coast
  • Servicing, repairs and refrigerant work on existing systems by F-Gas qualified engineers

Questions

Asked before most jobs.

Where in West Sussex is Arctic Cool based?

Our base is in Storrington, RH20, on the northern edge of the South Downs and close to the middle of the county. That puts Pulborough, Washington, Steyning, West Chiltington and Billingshurst a short drive away, Horsham and Worthing within an easy run, and the mid Sussex towns not much further on. When you ring you are speaking to a firm whose engineers live and work in the county, not a national call centre passing your details to whoever picks them up first.

Can you fit air conditioning in a flint cottage or a listed building?

Often yes, but it has to be done with respect for the building. Solid flint and brick walls need careful drilling, and in a conservation area like the centre of Storrington the position of the outdoor unit matters as much as the unit itself. Listed buildings usually need listed building consent before kit or pipework is fixed to the fabric. We always survey first, suggest unit positions that keep everything out of sight from the street, and tell you plainly if consent is needed before any work starts on site.

Which makes of air conditioning do you install?

We install Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric. Between them we can match most rooms and budgets, from a single quiet wall unit in a bedroom to a multi-split covering a whole house or a small office. All of them heat efficiently as well as cool, which matters in West Sussex where a garden room or loft office needs warming in January as much as cooling in July. Every install and every service is carried out by our own F-Gas qualified engineers, the legal requirement for anyone handling refrigerant.

Do you cover the whole of West Sussex?

Storrington sits near the middle of the county, so most West Sussex towns are comfortably within reach, and we take on work across the wider South East too. Rather than promise the whole map, we keep it simple. Tell us where you are, what the building is and what you need, and we will say straight away whether we can get to you and how quickly. It is a one minute conversation, and it saves you chasing quotes from firms that were never going to make the journey.
