The High Street is the heart of it, a conservation area with more than eighty listed buildings and a run of medieval and Tudor timber framed houses often described as the longest in England. The street plan behind those frontages was laid out in the thirteenth century as narrow building plots, which is why so many High Street properties are deep, thin and awkward to cable and pipe. Sackville College, an early seventeenth century sandstone almshouse, still closes the eastern end. Can I have air conditioning in a listed building or in the East Grinstead conservation area?
Often yes, but it needs planning before it needs tools. The conservation area around the High Street holds more than eighty listed buildings, and fixing an outdoor unit to a listed house normally needs listed building consent from Mid Sussex District Council. We look for positions that keep the condenser off the street elevation, in a rear yard or behind a parapet, and we route pipework to avoid cutting historic fabric. We will tell you honestly at the survey whether a scheme is likely to be approved.
Why does my loft room in East Grinstead get so hot, and what actually fixes it?
The town sits on a High Weald ridge and plenty of its houses have rooms built into the roof, where sun on the tiles turns the space into an oven by mid afternoon. Fans move the hot air around. A properly sized wall mounted split system removes the heat, filters the air and holds a set temperature, then works in reverse as efficient heating in winter. Many single room installs are finished in a day, with the outdoor unit placed discreetly at ground level or on a flat roof.
