Outdoor swimming pool heated by a heat pump

Swimming pool heat pumps

We carry out both the installation and the maintenance of swimming pool heat pumps, so the water is warm when you want it.

A pool without heating is a pool used a few weekends a year. A heat pump changes that: it draws warmth from the outside air and puts it into the water far more efficiently than direct electric heating, which is what makes a comfortable pool affordable to run.

We install swimming pool heat pumps and we maintain them, for new pools and as upgrades to existing ones. The survey looks at the pool size, the pipework and the space around it, and the system is sized to hold the temperature you actually want.

Maintenance is part of the job: a pool heat pump works hard through the season, and a yearly service keeps the efficiency up and catches problems early.

What is included

Installed, plumbed in and maintained.

Installation covers the positioning, the base, the plumbing connections into the pool circuit and the electrical work, finished with a proper handover of the controls.

From there we look after it: servicing on a schedule, checks before the season starts, and fast response if the water stops holding temperature.

Sizing

What decides the size of your heat pump.

Sizing off the pool volume alone is how people end up with a system that never quite gets there in May.

  • The volume of water

The starting figure, and the one most quotes are based on. It is only the starting figure.

  • Whether it is covered

A cover makes the single biggest difference to both the size you need and what it costs to run. Most heat loss is off the surface.

  • How sheltered the site is

An exposed pool on a windy plot loses heat far faster than one tucked behind planting or a wall.

  • The temperature you want

There is a real difference between a pool held at a mild temperature and one kept genuinely warm for young children.

  • How long a season

Heating from April to October asks considerably more of the equipment than warming the water for the school holidays.

Questions

Asked before most jobs.

What temperature can a pool heat pump hold?

Most outdoor pools are kept in the high twenties, and a properly sized heat pump will hold that through the season. Sizing depends on the pool volume, whether it is covered, and how sheltered the site is.

How much does a pool heat pump cost to run?

Far less than direct electric heating, because it moves heat from the air rather than generating it. A cover makes the biggest single difference to running cost, and we will say so at the survey.

Can you add a heat pump to an existing pool?

Usually, yes. It plumbs into the existing circulation system. The survey checks the pipework, the electrical supply and where the unit can sit so it is effective and unobtrusive.

Do pool heat pumps need servicing?

Yes, once a year, ideally before the season. We carry out both the installation and the maintenance, so the same engineers who fitted the system keep it running.

In their words

“Their installation actually enhanced the architectural aesthetics of a high design environment.”
