Heathfield sits high on a Wealden ridge between Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, a market town that grew up fast after the Cuckoo Line railway arrived in 1880. The centre of Heathfield is a railway town at heart. The streets around the High Street filled up in the decades after 1880 with Victorian and Edwardian houses, solid brick with bay windows and sash frames, and the growth carried on through the twentieth century with gable fronted 1930s homes and generous detached houses along the private roads. Further out, bungalows and chalet bungalows are everywhere, in Heathfield itself and in Broad Oak and Horam, and rooms built into their roofs are exactly the sort of space that becomes unusable in a hot spell. The oldest homes are out at Old Heathfield, the original village around the thirteenth century All Saints church, and in the lanes beyond it, where the housing runs to tile hung cottages, farmhouses, and converted oasts and barns. Can you install air conditioning in a chalet bungalow with rooms in the roof?
Yes, and it is one of the jobs we quote for most often around Heathfield. Rooms built into a roof sit directly under the tiles, so they overheat badly in summer and lose heat fast in winter. A wall mounted split unit on the landing or in each bedroom sorts both problems, because modern Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric systems heat as well as cool. Where the eaves allow it, a concealed ducted system keeps the walls completely clear. Either way the upstairs rooms finally get proper temperature control.
We live in a listed cottage near Old Heathfield. Is air conditioning still possible?
Often, yes, but the outdoor unit and the pipework need proper thought before anyone drills a hole. Listed building consent can be required for fixing equipment to the fabric of the building, and the High Weald National Landscape setting means positioning matters too. The usual approach in period and converted buildings is to keep the condenser at ground level, screened from view, with pipework routed along existing lines. We will tell you honestly at the survey stage what is and is not sensible. Nearly every building has a workable answer.
Do you cover the villages outside Heathfield, or just the town itself?
