Crowborough is the highest town in the High Weald, reaching 242 metres above sea level on a sandstone ridge at the eastern edge of Ashdown Forest. After the railway reached Jarvis Brook in 1868 the town was promoted as a health resort, and the villas built for that boom still line the roads around the Beacon. Arthur Conan Doyle spent the last years of his life at Windlesham Manor here. Tall Victorian and Edwardian houses, chalet bungalows and brand new estates all get the same summer problem, upstairs rooms and glazed extensions that hold heat long into the evening. The villas that made Crowborough are still its signature. Sold to Victorian and Edwardian buyers on its elevation and air, the town gained tall detached houses, tile hung gables and generous gardens along the ridge, and part of the town has been a designated conservation area since 2017. These are lovely houses to cool. High ceilings and solid walls slow the heat down, but converted lofts, rear extensions and big south facing windows undo that work on a hot afternoon. We run neat, discreet pipework, place condensers where they cannot be seen from the street, and pick quiet wall mounted units that sit comfortably in a period room.
Crowborough grew by joining up its hamlets, and you can still read the seams. St Johns, Whitehill, Poundfield, Alderbrook and Steel Cross each brought their own mix, with twentieth century detached homes and chalet bungalows filling the gaps around Crowborough Warren and the Common. Chalet bungalows are a particular case for us, because the bedroom in the roof cooks in summer. At the other end of the scale, the new Dandara estates at Braeburn Fields and Pearmain Place are built airtight and well insulated, which keeps bills down in winter and traps heat in July. A compact split system suits both extremes.

You are based in Storrington, so do you actually cover Crowborough?
Honestly, yes, often. We are a Storrington firm working across the South East, and jobs regularly take us into East Sussex. Can you fit air conditioning in an older Crowborough house without ruining it?
Yes, and it is a big part of what we do here. Victorian and Edwardian houses take a split system well, we keep pipe runs short and boxed in, choose slim indoor units in white that sit quietly above a door or window, and position the outdoor condenser out of sight of the street. Part of the town is a conservation area, so placement needs a little more thought there, and we will flag anything that might need a word with Wealden District Council before work starts.

Modern building regulations produce houses that are airtight and heavily insulated, which is exactly what you want in January and exactly what you do not want during a heatwave. The heat that gets in through glazing and sunlit rooms has nowhere to go, and upstairs bedrooms stay warm all night. A small wall mounted split solves it, cooling the room in minutes and running quietly enough to sleep with it on. The same unit reverses in winter to give cheap, controllable heating.
