Heat pumps

Heat pumps

One system that heats the house in January and cools it in July, for less than you would expect it to cost to run.

A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it. In winter it draws warmth from the outside air and brings it indoors; in summer it works in reverse and cools. That is why the running costs beat traditional heating, and why one system does both jobs.

We install, service and repair air source heat pumps for homes and businesses. The survey tells us the size of the space, the insulation and what you want from it, and we recommend a system to match.

We fit Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric heat pump systems, and every installation is carried out by our own F-Gas qualified engineers.

Why a heat pump

Heating and cooling from one box.

Compared with separate heating and cooling, a heat pump is one outdoor unit, one set of controls and one service visit. Efficiency is the point: a modern system delivers far more heat than the electricity it draws.

Maintenance keeps it that way. We check refrigerant, airflow and controls on a schedule in line with the manufacturer’s requirements, so the efficiency you paid for is the efficiency you keep.

How it works

Moving heat, not making it.

This is the whole reason the running costs look the way they do.

  • It moves heat

There is usable warmth in outdoor air even in the middle of winter. The unit collects it and brings it inside, rather than burning anything to create it.

  • It runs both ways

In summer the cycle reverses and the same equipment takes heat out of the room and puts it outside. One system, one outdoor unit, both jobs.

  • That is where the saving is

Because it is moving heat rather than generating it, a heat pump delivers considerably more heat than the electricity it draws. Direct electric heating cannot do that.

Questions

Asked before most jobs.

Do heat pumps work in cold weather?

Yes. The systems we fit are designed for UK winters and keep heating efficiently well below freezing. Sizing matters, which is why we survey the space rather than quoting from a floor area alone.

Are heat pumps expensive to run?

They are usually the cheapest way to heat a room electrically, because they move heat rather than generate it. A modern unit delivers several times more heat than the electricity it uses.

Can a heat pump replace my radiators?

An air to air system like the ones we fit heats the room directly through the indoor unit rather than through radiators. Many customers run them as the main heating for the rooms they live in and keep the old system as backup.

How long does a heat pump last?

With annual servicing, well over a decade is normal. We provide a maintenance schedule in line with the manufacturer’s requirements, which keeps the efficiency up and the warranty intact.

In their words

“Their installation actually enhanced the architectural aesthetics of a high design environment.”
